On a cruise… in my underwear
By mattsmallbone. Filed in Health |Tags: cruise, funny, Michael W. Smith
I once locked myself out of my room on a cruise ship. I was only wearing boxer shorts. My wife was with me… and our 2 young sons were locked inside.
To make things worse… this was a Michael W. Smith cruise and I was the bass player. It was a tad awkward when the people over the hallway (and massive MWS fans) came out to see if they could help.
However… our family has adopted this mantra as our own:
“If it’s gonna be funny one day… it’s funny right now”.
As Mary and I stood in the hallway we laughed about it. We knew that we were living a moment that we would speak about for the rest of our lives.
You should try laughing the next time you are in an embarrassing situation. Being too serious about your own misfortune makes you a boring dinner party guest… and when it gets down to it… life is better when you are the type of person that gets invited out for supper once in a while. It IS possible to enjoy your misadventures while they are happening. You just need to loosen up a bit.
Laugh some more… even if it is only with yourself… it is salve for your soul.
PS – We are cruising to Alaska again in July… with Max Lucado, Matthew West and Natalie Grant. You should join us. Check out this link.

should we be asking where you were going outside of your room in your undies to start with? lol
i got myself locked out on formal night… where i’d decided to do pics, i’d intentionally decided to leave my nametag and lanyard in my room.. completely forgetting that i’d attached my room key to it too.

We were getting the bags out of the room on the last night of cruise… and the misadventure began… at least I had clothes out in the hallway with me!

I love that mantra – I may have to adopt it as my own!

Hi Matt, Cool story. We’ve been talking about you of late! My husband knows your dad from way back in youth group days in Stanthorpe, Qld – Aussie! Col is a HUGE Michael fan (from way back too) – and the first time we left our kids with my parents was when we went to see Michael in Brisbane last time he came to Aus. Well – Colin has been sick since then. Has been fighting a GBM brain tumour (cancer)- he had first seizure after playing at church Christmas Day 07! BUT I am hoping to bring him over for the CRUISE this year! It’s been our dream since the first cruise. We have 2 young children now. With the support of our church and family and friends, and their faithful prayers, Colin is in remission today, and is very active. Anyway, I am working hard to organize the family to come on this cruise. I do hope we get to meet you in July! I completely agree with you re the laughing at yourselves. We’ve had some pretty tricky times the last two years. But you always have to think of the cup being half full, and looking at the good things!
So excited, even at the thought of doing this. I’m sure Col would love to meet you too!
