800 miles… another white dash

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

I just got back from a 30 hr jaunt off to Purdue University to help at an event for Gov. Mike Huckabee. I love that guy. He has copped it a bit from the media over the last few days, but I must say that he displays great poise at moments like this.

I had to drive a bit over 800 miles to/ from the event and had a great time gathering my thoughts and thinking through what the next few months of life ‘off the road’ should look like. I realised a few things:

1. Both my family and I are very skilled at me being away.

2. I want to dig in and start preaching consistently again.

3. I dislike country music even more when I am driving in the rain.

I realize these are apparent non-sequiturs… however I feel that all three validate the place in life that I am at right now.

1. It is a rare gift to have the support that I get from my family for my carny lifestyle.  My wife genuinely enjoys my life whilst developing as an individual herself. I am coming to understand that 2 people continuing to grow as individuals throughout marriage is key to the whole thing working.

2. I have plenty of time at different seasons in the year to encourage the wider community via the spoken word.

3. I love the band that I am in. The music is extremely fulfilling and purposeful.

So… as 2010 pokes its head around the corner, I am hopeful that life will pretty much look the same… except perhaps with a bit of preaching thrown in.

Sounds good to me!

Why me?

Saturday, November 21st, 2009

Hey there,

If you are visiting my blog today, chances are that you are a friend, family member or fan of Michael W. Smith’s music. Welcome!

I am in Albany, NY today, on the final day of the USA leg of Michael W. Smith’s ‘A New Hallelujah Tour’. It has been a great year and a half since we made the ‘A New Hallelujah’ worship album in Houston, TX.

As I look back over the last 18 months I think of many great moments. The birth of Jack, Isaac’s first day at ‘Mothers Day Out’, playing to and worshiping with 44,000 Dutch folk whilst being beamed live to TV all over Europe… It is a charmed life. Too many planes to count, too many laughs to relive.

As the year draws to a close, I am struck by the mystery of how I got to be in this awesome place. I feel like I am living in some other dude’s dream. None of this rock’n'roll life was ever the goal. In fact, the only goal that I ever had was to marry Mary Henderson. I got that done in 2001….

So, why do I get to live this life that so many dream of?

I’m not sure.

However…

I have been brave enough to make some great decisions in my life. Sometimes that is all that matters.

I also position myself in the reality that ‘His grace is enough’. And honestly, with that insight comes much rest and joy.

To quote Lightning McQueen (from Caleb’s favourite Movie… CARS) “I love being me”…

I can’t be more grateful for this current season of heaven on earth.

Check back in on me soon.

Matt
